Det finns i m\u00e4nniskor, djur, v\u00e4xter och till och med i encelliga och fylogenetiskt ur\u00e5ldriga alger som \u00e4r tre miljarder \u00e5r gamla. Melatonin reglerar m\u00e4nniskans biologiska klocka som ett naturligt hormon. Det kallas ocks\u00e5 f\u00f6r m\u00f6rkerhormon, eftersom det f\u00f6rmedlar information om nattens l\u00e4ngd och tidpunkt till organismen i form av en hormonell signal. Under dagen produceras knappt n\u00e5got melatonin alls. Melatoninproduktionen sker genom en signal fr\u00e5n den suprachiasmatiska k\u00e4rnan i hypotalamus, som i h\u00f6g grad reglerar den cirkadiska rytmen. Om \u00f6gats n\u00e4thinna inte l\u00e4ngre uppfattar tillr\u00e4ckligt med bl\u00e5tt ljus informeras den suprachiasmatiska k\u00e4rnan, vilket i sin tur f\u00e5r tallkottk\u00f6rteln att producera melatonin. P\u00e5 s\u00e5 s\u00e4tt fris\u00e4tts hormonet enligt en best\u00e4md rytm, s\u00e4rskilt p\u00e5 natten, p\u00e5 ett cykliskt s\u00e4tt i blodet och informerar hela kroppen om den aktuella dygnsfasen. N\u00e4r n\u00e4thinnan f\u00e5ngar upp det f\u00f6rsta dagsljuset stoppas produktionen av melatonin och ist\u00e4llet b\u00f6rjar produktionen av andra hormoner, som \u00e4r n\u00f6dv\u00e4ndiga f\u00f6r att vara vaken. Denna cykel bidrar till att skapa en dygnsrytm, eller en 24-timmars s\u00f6mn- och vakenhetscykel. Hos m\u00e4nniskor med en sund dygnsrytm stiger melatoninniv\u00e5erna snabbt efter m\u00f6rkrets inbrott f\u00f6r att sedan ligga kvar p\u00e5 en konstant niv\u00e5 under hela natten fram till tidig morgon. Denna h\u00f6ga niv\u00e5 \u00e4r inte bara n\u00f6dv\u00e4ndig f\u00f6r att somna, utan ocks\u00e5 f\u00f6r att sova djupt och vilsamt. Tidigt p\u00e5 morgonen sjunker melatoninniv\u00e5n kraftigt igen, s\u00e5 att m\u00e4nniskan kan reagera p\u00e5 det \u00f6kande ljuset och vakna.<\/p>\n<p>Den moderna m\u00e4nniskan \u00e4r inte bara den enda levande varelse som avviker fr\u00e5n sin rytm och g\u00f6r dag av natt, utan det \u00e4r ocks\u00e5 ett faktum att ju \u00e4ldre vi blir, desto mindre blir v\u00e5r nattliga melatoninproduktion, vilket leder till en kortare signal som f\u00f6rmedlas till hela kroppen. Ofta aktiveras den inte f\u00f6rr\u00e4n l\u00e5ngt efter midnatt. Men i b\u00f6rjan av dagen stannar uts\u00f6ndringen av hormonet i tid.
