Man skiljer mellan melatoninreceptor 1 och 2 (MTL1 och MTL2), som var och en har sin egen specifika utbredning och delvis specifika funktion. B\u00e5da \u00e4r s\u00e5 kallade membranreceptorer, p\u00e5 vars utsida melatonin kan docka. Om denna typ av bindning uppst\u00e5r utl\u00f6ses en m\u00e4ngd olika processer genom specifika G-proteiner inuti cellen, vilket leder till efterf\u00f6ljande effekter av melatonin p\u00e5 cellen. Dessutom finns det en tredje klass av receptorer, som inte \u00e4r f\u00f6rankrade i cellmembranet utan befinner sig inne i cellen. Denna klass av receptorer finns dock bara hos vissa djurarter och spelar ingen st\u00f6rre roll f\u00f6r m\u00e4nniskan.<\/p>\n<p>De ovan n\u00e4mnda melatoninreceptorerna 1 och 2 \u00e4r f\u00f6rdelade p\u00e5 ett antal organ, d\u00e4r man hittar dem p\u00e5 specifika cellstrukturer. Tidsinformationen, som baseras p\u00e5 den oscillerande (sv\u00e4ngande) melatoninkoncentrationen, \u00f6verf\u00f6rs till v\u00e4vnader och hela kroppen.<\/p>\n<p>Den h\u00f6gsta densiteten av melatoninreceptorer finns i vissa omr\u00e5den av hj\u00e4rnan. Det \u00e4r intressant att notera att f\u00f6rdelningen kan vara mycket olika mellan olika arter. Till exempel har gnagare och d\u00e4ggdjur fr\u00e4mst receptorer i de omr\u00e5den som kontrollerar den inre klockan och gonadfunktionerna (organ i kroppen som beh\u00f6vs f\u00f6r att producera k\u00f6nshormoner och tj\u00e4na till reproduktion), medan det andra omr\u00e5det (f\u00f6rutom den inre klockan som inneh\u00e5ller flest receptorer) hos m\u00e4nniskor finns i lillhj\u00e4rnan och hj\u00e4rnbarken, men inte i de omr\u00e5den som kontrollerar gonadfunktionerna. Detta g\u00f6r det tydligt att melatoninets funktion har f\u00f6r\u00e4ndrats under evolutionens g\u00e5ng, och att alla resultat som kan samlas in fr\u00e5n djurmodeller inte kan \u00f6verf\u00f6ras till m\u00e4nniskor en-till-en. F\u00f6rutom receptorerna i hj\u00e4rnan har m\u00e5nga av dessa bindningsst\u00e4llen uppt\u00e4ckts i andra perifera organ. N\u00e5gra av dessa organ som inneh\u00e5ller melatoninreceptorer \u00e4r bukspottk\u00f6rteln, levern, \u00f6gonen, huden, vissa blodk\u00e4rl, tarmkanalen och delar av k\u00f6nsk\u00f6rtlarna. Den exakta funktionen hos dessa receptorer \u00e4r fortfarande f\u00f6rem\u00e5l f\u00f6r omfattande forskning. I detta fall kr\u00e4vs inga specifika bindningspunkter, utan melatoninet fungerar ist\u00e4llet som en potent radikalf\u00e5ngare. Resultat fr\u00e5n djurf\u00f6rs\u00f6k kan direkt \u00f6verf\u00f6ras till m\u00e4nniskor, eftersom funktionen enbart \u00e4r ett resultat av melatoninets molekylstruktur. Eftersom melatonin kan tr\u00e4nga in i n\u00e4stan alla celler, kan det skydda alla organ s\u00e5 snart det \u00e4r n\u00e4rvarande. Med tanke p\u00e5 att hormonet fr\u00e4mst produceras p\u00e5 natten och mycket l\u00e4tt kan ta sig igenom blod-hj\u00e4rnbarri\u00e4ren, kan det spela en f\u00f6rebyggande roll mot oxidativa st\u00f6rningar i s\u00e5v\u00e4l hj\u00e4rnans nervceller som i andra organ under natts\u00f6mnen.
