Rozli\u0161uje sa melaton\u00ednov\u00fd receptor 1 a 2 (MTL1 a MTL2), ktor\u00e9 maj\u00fa ka\u017ed\u00fd svoje \u0161pecifick\u00e9 rozdelenie a \u010diasto\u010dne \u0161pecifick\u00fa funkciu. V oboch pr\u00edpadoch ide o tzv. membr\u00e1nov\u00e9 receptory, na ktor\u00fdch vonkaj\u0161ej strane je melaton\u00edn schopn\u00fd zakotvi\u0165. Ak d\u00f4jde k tomuto typu v\u00e4zby, spustia sa prostredn\u00edctvom \u0161pecifick\u00fdch G prote\u00ednov vo vn\u00fatri bunky r\u00f4zne procesy, ktor\u00e9 ved\u00fa k n\u00e1sledn\u00fdm \u00fa\u010dinkom melaton\u00ednu na bunku. Okrem toho existuje tretia trieda receptorov, ktor\u00e1 nie je ukotven\u00e1 v bunkovej membr\u00e1ne, ale nach\u00e1dza sa vo vn\u00fatri bunky. T\u00e1to trieda receptorov sa v\u0161ak vyskytuje len u niektor\u00fdch druhov \u017eivo\u010d\u00edchov a u \u013eud\u00ed nehr\u00e1 v\u00fdznamn\u00fa \u00falohu.<\/p>\n<p>Uveden\u00e9 melaton\u00ednov\u00e9 receptory 1 a 2 s\u00fa rozmiestnen\u00e9 v mnoh\u00fdch org\u00e1noch, kde ich n\u00e1jdeme na \u0161pecifick\u00fdch bunkov\u00fdch \u0161trukt\u00farach. \u010casov\u00e1 inform\u00e1cia, ktor\u00e1 vych\u00e1dza z osciluj\u00facej (kol\u00edsaj\u00facej) koncentr\u00e1cie melaton\u00ednu, sa pren\u00e1\u0161a do tkan\u00edv a cel\u00e9ho tela.<\/p>\n<p>Najv\u00e4\u010d\u0161iu hustotu melaton\u00ednov\u00fdch receptorov mo\u017eno n\u00e1js\u0165 v ur\u010dit\u00fdch oblastiach mozgu. Je zauj\u00edmav\u00e9, \u017ee rozlo\u017eenie m\u00f4\u017ee by\u0165 u r\u00f4znych druhov ve\u013emi odli\u0161n\u00e9. Napr\u00edklad hlodavce a cicavce maj\u00fa receptory najm\u00e4 v oblastiach, ktor\u00e9 riadia vn\u00fatorn\u00e9 hodiny a funkcie gon\u00e1d (org\u00e1ny tela, ktor\u00e9 s\u00fa potrebn\u00e9 na produkciu pohlavn\u00fdch horm\u00f3nov a sl\u00fa\u017eia na rozmno\u017eovanie), zatia\u013e \u010do u \u013eud\u00ed je in\u00e1 oblas\u0165 (okrem vn\u00fatorn\u00fdch hod\u00edn, ktor\u00e1 obsahuje najviac receptorov) v mozo\u010dku a mozgovej k\u00f4re, ale nie v oblastiach, ktor\u00e9 riadia funkcie gon\u00e1d. Z toho jasne vypl\u00fdva, \u017ee funkcia melaton\u00ednu sa v priebehu evol\u00facie zmenila a \u017ee nie v\u0161etky v\u00fdsledky, ktor\u00e9 sa daj\u00fa z\u00edska\u0165 zo zvierac\u00edch modelov, sa daj\u00fa jedna ku jednej prenies\u0165 na \u013eud\u00ed. Okrem receptorov v mozgu sa mnoh\u00e9 z t\u00fdchto v\u00e4zobn\u00fdch miest objavili aj v in\u00fdch perif\u00e9rnych org\u00e1noch. Medzi niektor\u00e9 z t\u00fdchto org\u00e1nov, ktor\u00e9 obsahuj\u00fa melaton\u00ednov\u00e9 receptory, patr\u00ed pankreas, pe\u010de\u0148, o\u010di, ko\u017ea, niektor\u00e9 cievy, \u010drevn\u00fd trakt a \u010dasti pohlavn\u00fdch \u017eliaz. Presn\u00e1 funkcia t\u00fdchto receptorov sa st\u00e1le intenz\u00edvne sk\u00fama. Je ist\u00e9, \u017ee tieto spojovacie miesta sa podie\u013eaj\u00fa na prepojen\u00ed denn\u00e9ho\/no\u010dn\u00e9ho rytmu s funkciami konkr\u00e9tnych org\u00e1nov. V tomto pr\u00edpade nevy\u017eaduje \u0161pecifick\u00e9 v\u00e4zobn\u00e9 miesta, ale namiesto toho p\u00f4sob\u00ed ako siln\u00fd vychyt\u00e1va\u010d radik\u00e1lov. V\u00fdsledky pokusov na zvierat\u00e1ch sa daj\u00fa priamo prenies\u0165 na \u013eud\u00ed, preto\u017ee t\u00e1to funkcia vypl\u00fdva v\u00fdlu\u010dne z molekul\u00e1rnej \u0161trukt\u00fary melaton\u00ednu. Ke\u010f\u017ee melaton\u00edn m\u00f4\u017ee vstupova\u0165 takmer do v\u0161etk\u00fdch buniek, je schopn\u00fd chr\u00e1ni\u0165 v\u0161etky org\u00e1ny hne\u010f, ako sa v nich objav\u00ed. Vzh\u013eadom na to, \u017ee horm\u00f3n sa produkuje preva\u017ene v noci a m\u00f4\u017ee ve\u013emi \u013eahko prenikn\u00fa\u0165 cez hematoencefalick\u00fa bari\u00e9ru, m\u00f4\u017ee zohr\u00e1va\u0165 prevent\u00edvnu \u00falohu proti oxida\u010dn\u00fdm poruch\u00e1m v nervov\u00fdch bunk\u00e1ch mozgu, ako aj v in\u00fdch org\u00e1noch po\u010das sp\u00e1nku v noci.
