In particolare, si parla spesso dell&#8217;importanza dei livelli di melatonina. Tuttavia, molte persone non comprendono le basi di questo ormone. La sua produzione e il suo rilascio nel flusso sanguigno sono indotti in risposta al buio, ma \u00e8 presente anche in piccole quantit\u00e0 negli alimenti. Le quantit\u00e0 naturalmente presenti negli alimenti non sono generalmente sufficienti per influenzare i sistemi biologici.<\/p>\n<p>Quando viene prodotto dalla ghiandola pineale, questo ormone controlla i cicli sonno-veglia innati. I moderni studi di biologia circadiana hanno identificato esattamente i meccanismi che portano dalla sensazione di buio al sonno. Speciali sensori nella retina dell&#8217;occhio rilevano la luce. In presenza di luce, inviano segnali nervosi al nucleo soprachiasmatico dell&#8217;ipotalamo, una parte del cervello. Il nucleo soprachiasmatico, o SCN, \u00e8 noto come &#8220;orologio maestro&#8221; e contribuisce a regolare molti dei ritmi del nostro corpo in base al ciclo di 24 ore.<\/p>\n<p>Quando viene stimolato dalla luce, il SCN invia segnali che impediscono alla ghiandola pineale di rilasciare melatonina in grandi quantit\u00e0. Per questo motivo, i livelli di melatonina durante le ore di luce solare sono cos\u00ec bassi da essere a malapena rilevabili nelle persone sane. In effetti, l&#8217;assunzione di integratori di melatonina pu\u00f2 far sentire pi\u00f9 sonnolente anche le persone ben riposate.
