De nouvelles recherches sugg\u00e8rent que le report de l&rsquo;heure de d\u00e9but des cours n&rsquo;est peut-\u00eatre pas la solution pour nos adolescents en manque de sommeil.<\/p>\n<p>Vous avez probablement entendu parler de l&rsquo;appel lanc\u00e9 r\u00e9cemment aux coll\u00e8ges et aux lyc\u00e9es pour qu&rsquo;ils retardent l&rsquo;heure de d\u00e9but des cours. En effet, m\u00eame les <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aap.org\/en-us\/about-the-aap\/aap-press-room\/pages\/Let-Them-Sleep-AAP-Recommends-Delaying-Start-Times-of-Middle-and-High-Schools-to-Combat-Teen-Sleep-Deprivation.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">p\u00e9diatres am\u00e9ricains<\/a> soutiennent cette id\u00e9e. En effet, les adolescents ont un <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chronobiology.com\/teenagers-need-more-sleep-so-why-are-they-getting-less\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rythme circadien d\u00e9cal\u00e9 par rapport \u00e0 celui des adultes<\/a>, ce qui les emp\u00eache de se coucher t\u00f4t et de se r\u00e9veiller \u00e0 l&rsquo;aube. Il en r\u00e9sulte une nation d&rsquo;adolescents et de jeunes adultes en manque de sommeil. Cependant, une nouvelle \u00e9tude sugg\u00e8re que l&rsquo;allongement de l&rsquo;heure de d\u00e9but des cours n&rsquo;augmenterait pas n\u00e9cessairement la quantit\u00e9 de sommeil de nos adolescents. D&rsquo;autres facteurs pourraient-ils expliquer l&rsquo;heure de coucher de plus en plus tardive de nos adolescents ?<\/p>\n<h2>Les adolescents et le rythme circadien<\/h2>\n<p>Les chercheurs en chronobiologie ont \u00e9tudi\u00e9 deux groupes d&rsquo;adolescents : Des adolescents europ\u00e9ens et des adolescents issus de groupes de chasseurs-cueilleurs en Afrique. Alors que les adolescents europ\u00e9ens avaient un rythme circadien beaucoup plus tardif que les adultes qui les entouraient, ce n&rsquo;\u00e9tait pas le cas des adolescents des groupes de chasseurs-cueilleurs africains. En fait, les adolescents africains qui passent une grande partie de leur journ\u00e9e \u00e0 l&rsquo;ext\u00e9rieur se couchent t\u00f4t et se l\u00e8vent \u00e0 l&rsquo;aube. Il semble que les adolescents n&rsquo;aient pas un rythme circadien naturellement plus tardif, mais qu&rsquo;ils soient simplement plus sensibles aux perturbations du rythme circadien. Dans un monde de tablettes, de t\u00e9l\u00e9visions et de lumi\u00e8res artificielles, il y a beaucoup de raisons pour qu&rsquo;un cerveau reste \u00e9veill\u00e9 tard dans la nuit.<\/p>\n<p>En revanche, les adolescents qui ne sont pas expos\u00e9s \u00e0 ces facteurs semblent capables de s&rsquo;endormir et de se r\u00e9veiller t\u00f4t. Cependant, un mod\u00e8le math\u00e9matique s&rsquo;inscrit en faux. Ce mod\u00e8le math\u00e9matique, utilis\u00e9 depuis le XVIIe si\u00e8cle, sugg\u00e8re que si l&rsquo;on retarde l&rsquo;heure de d\u00e9but des cours, les <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surrey.ac.uk\/mediacentre\/press\/2017\/mathematicians-predict-delaying-school-start-times-won%E2%80%99t-help-sleep-deprived\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rythmes circadiens des jeunes \u00e9l\u00e8ves ne feront que se d\u00e9caler vers l&rsquo;avant<\/a>. Le r\u00e9sultat dans ce cas serait la m\u00eame quantit\u00e9 de sommeil. Selon ce mod\u00e8le, le temps d&rsquo;exposition aux \u00e9crans semble d\u00e9terminer le temps de sommeil des adolescents.<\/p>\n<p>Toutefois, cette recherche est bas\u00e9e sur le Royaume-Uni, o\u00f9 les heures de d\u00e9but des cours ne sont pas les m\u00eames qu&rsquo;aux \u00c9tats-Unis. Aux \u00c9tats-Unis, o\u00f9 les \u00e9coles commencent d\u00e8s 7 heures du matin et o\u00f9 il y a m\u00eame parfois des activit\u00e9s avant le d\u00e9but des cours, les \u00e9l\u00e8ves pourraient tr\u00e8s bien tirer davantage de b\u00e9n\u00e9fices et dormir plus longtemps si l&rsquo;heure de d\u00e9but des cours \u00e9tait plus tardive.<\/p>\n<h2>Le repos dont le corps en pleine croissance a besoin<\/h2>\n<p>Le manque de sommeil peut avoir des effets d\u00e9vastateurs sur les corps en pleine croissance. Les adolescents peuvent \u00e9prouver des difficult\u00e9s \u00e0 se concentrer, \u00e0 g\u00e9rer leurs \u00e9motions et \u00e0 perdre la m\u00e9moire \u00e0 court terme. On a \u00e9galement constat\u00e9 que le manque de sommeil avait des effets physiques tr\u00e8s r\u00e9els, contribuant \u00e0 un risque plus \u00e9lev\u00e9 de troubles m\u00e9taboliques, de maladies cardiaques et m\u00eame d&rsquo;accidents de la route. Quelle que soit l&rsquo;heure de la rentr\u00e9e scolaire, voici quelques conseils pour permettre aux adolescents et aux adultes de mieux se reposer :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Respecter la m\u00eame heure de coucher et de lever tous les jours, m\u00eame le week-end.<\/li>\n<li>\u00c9viter de manger, de faire de l&rsquo;exercice et d&rsquo;autres activit\u00e9s stimulantes dans l&rsquo;heure qui pr\u00e9c\u00e8de le coucher.<\/li>\n<li>Garder la chambre dans l&rsquo;obscurit\u00e9, sans lumi\u00e8res vives ni \u00e9crans<\/li>\n<li>Adopter une routine \u00e0 l&rsquo;heure du coucher<\/li>\n<li>N&rsquo;utiliser l&rsquo;endroit o\u00f9 l&rsquo;on dort que pour des activit\u00e9s relaxantes, faire ses devoirs et regarder la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision ailleurs.<\/li>\n<li>Prendre des suppl\u00e9ments de m\u00e9latonine selon les recommandations de votre m\u00e9decin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Le report de l&rsquo;heure de d\u00e9but des cours aidera-t-il les enfants \u00e0 prendre le repos dont ils ont besoin ? La question n&rsquo;est pas encore tranch\u00e9e. Toutefois, il est essentiel pour la croissance et le d\u00e9veloppement de l&rsquo;enfant et de l&rsquo;adolescent de dormir suffisamment, quelle que soit l&rsquo;heure \u00e0 laquelle il commence l&rsquo;\u00e9cole.
