Det findes i mennesker, dyr, planter og endda i encellede og fylogenetisk \u00e6ldgamle alger, der er tre milliarder \u00e5r gamle. Melatonin regulerer menneskets biologiske ur som et naturligt hormon. Det kaldes ogs\u00e5 et m\u00f8rkehormon, fordi det overf\u00f8rer information om nattens l\u00e6ngde og tidspunkt til organismen som et hormonelt signal. I l\u00f8bet af dagen produceres melatonin n\u00e6sten ikke. Melatoninproduktionen sker gennem indikationer fra den suprachiasmatiske kerne i hypothalamus, som i h\u00f8j grad regulerer den cirkadiske rytme. Hvis \u00f8jets nethinde oph\u00f8rer med at opfatte nok bl\u00e5t lys, bliver den suprachiasmatiske kerne informeret, hvilket igen f\u00e5r koglekirtlen til at producere melatonin. P\u00e5 denne m\u00e5de frigives hormonet i en bestemt rytme, is\u00e6r om natten, p\u00e5 en cyklisk m\u00e5de i blodet og informerer hele kroppen om den aktuelle d\u00f8gnfase. N\u00e5r nethinden fanger det f\u00f8rste dagslys, stopper produktionen af melatonin, og i stedet begynder produktionen af andre hormoner, som er n\u00f8dvendige for at v\u00e6re v\u00e5gen. Denne cyklus er med til at skabe en d\u00f8gnrytme, eller en 24-timers s\u00f8vn\/v\u00e5gen-cyklus. P\u00e5 grund af de forskellige lysforhold i l\u00f8bet af \u00e5rstiderne skabes der en \u00e5rlig rytme ved siden af den cirkadiske (daglige) rytme. Om vinteren produceres og frigives melatonin i blodet i en l\u00e6ngere periode end om sommeren.<\/p>\n<p>Melatonin har en meget kort halveringstid p\u00e5 ca. 30 minutter. Da det nedbrydes s\u00e5 hurtigt, skal det produceres permanent i l\u00f8bet af natten, bl.a. for at man kan f\u00e5 en god nattes\u00f8vn. Hos mennesker med en sund d\u00f8gnrytme stiger melatoninniveauet hurtigt efter m\u00f8rkets frembrud og forbliver derefter forh\u00f8jet p\u00e5 et konstant niveau hele natten til tidligt om morgenen. Dette h\u00f8je niveau er ikke kun n\u00f8dvendigt for at falde i s\u00f8vn, men ogs\u00e5 for at sove dybt og afslappet. Tidligt om morgenen falder melatoninniveauet igen kraftigt, for at mennesket kan reagere p\u00e5 det stigende lys og v\u00e5gne op.<\/p>\n<p>Ikke alene er det moderne menneske det eneste levende v\u00e6sen, der afviger fra sin rytme og g\u00f8r dag ud af nat, men det er ogs\u00e5 et faktum, at jo \u00e6ldre vi bliver, jo mindre er vores natlige melatoninproduktion, hvilket f\u00f8rer til et kortere signal, der formidles til hele kroppen. Ofte aktiveres det f\u00f8rst l\u00e6nge efter midnat. Men i starten af dagen stopper udskillelsen af hormonet i tide.
