Man skelner mellem melatoninreceptor 1 og 2 (MTL1 og MTL2), som hver is\u00e6r har deres egen specifikke udbredelse og delvist specifikke funktion. Begge er s\u00e5kaldte membranreceptorer, p\u00e5 hvis yderside melatonin er i stand til at docke. Hvis denne type binding opst\u00e5r, udl\u00f8ses en r\u00e6kke processer gennem specifikke G-proteiner inde i cellen, som f\u00f8rer til efterf\u00f8lgende effekter af melatonin p\u00e5 cellen. Derudover er der en tredje klasse af receptorer, som ikke er forankret i cellemembranen, men befinder sig inde i cellen. Denne klasse af receptorer findes dog kun i visse dyrearter og spiller ikke en v\u00e6sentlig rolle for mennesker.<\/p>\n<p>De ovenfor n\u00e6vnte melatoninreceptorer 1 og 2 er fordelt p\u00e5 en r\u00e6kke organer, hvor man finder dem p\u00e5 specifikke cellestrukturer. Tidsinformationen, som er baseret p\u00e5 den oscillerende (svingende) melatoninkoncentration, overf\u00f8res til v\u00e6v og hele kroppen.<\/p>\n<p>Den h\u00f8jeste t\u00e6thed af melatoninreceptorer findes i visse omr\u00e5der af hjernen. Det er interessant at bem\u00e6rke, at fordelingen kan v\u00e6re meget forskellig blandt forskellige arter. For eksempel har gnavere og pattedyr hovedsageligt receptorer i de omr\u00e5der, der styrer det indre ur og gonadefunktionerne (organer i kroppen, der er n\u00f8dvendige for at producere k\u00f8nshormoner og tjene til reproduktion), mens det andet omr\u00e5de (ud over det indre ur, der indeholder flest receptorer) hos mennesker er i lillehjernen og hjernebarken, men ikke i de omr\u00e5der, der styrer gonadefunktionerne. Dette g\u00f8r det klart, at melatonins funktion har \u00e6ndret sig i l\u00f8bet af evolutionen, og at ikke alle de resultater, der kan indsamles fra dyremodeller, kan overf\u00f8res til mennesker en-til-en. Ud over receptorerne i hjernen er mange af disse bindingssteder blevet opdaget i andre perifere organer. Et par af disse organer, som indeholder melatoninreceptorer, omfatter bugspytkirtlen, leveren, \u00f8jnene, huden, visse blodkar, tarmkanalen og dele af k\u00f8nskirtlerne. I dette tilf\u00e6lde kr\u00e6ver det ikke specifikke bindingspunkter, men fungerer i stedet som en potent radikalfanger. Resultater fra dyrefors\u00f8g kan overf\u00f8res direkte til mennesker, da funktionen udelukkende er et resultat af melatonins molekyl\u00e6re struktur. Da melatonin kan tr\u00e6nge ind i n\u00e6sten alle celler, er det i stand til at beskytte alle organer, s\u00e5 snart det er til stede. I betragtning af, at hormonet mest produceres om natten og meget let kan tr\u00e6nge igennem blod-hjerne-barrieren, kan det spille en forebyggende rolle mod oxidative forstyrrelser i b\u00e5de hjernens nerveceller og i andre organer under nattes\u00f8vnen.
